CI Cover Art Contest

CONTEST DETAILS

TCRP’s Criminal Injustice Program is publishing a report on the Houston Police Department’s use of non-safety traffic stops.

In 2022, HPD conducted over 250,000 traffic stops. Black Houston drivers represented 60% of all traffic violation arrests despite only representing 20% of Houston’s population. When examining the use of force during HPD traffic stops, Black drivers were assaulted the most, experiencing 58% of the 4,400 cases reported by HPD. Latinos represented 33% of traffic stop assaults. We believe by passing an ordinance that limits the police to only patrol for speeding, reckless driving, and passing red lights, we could prevent the violence Black and Brown drivers are experiencing at the hands of the police. Our report will elaborate on these issues and promote our vision for public safety.

We are holding an art contest for the cover art of this report! We need you to help us create a cover that captures our vision for public safety.  Learn more about our Criminal Injustice Program here. The deadline to submit your art is Sunday, June 18, 2023.

TCRP'S VISION FOR PUBLIC SAFETY

We envision a Texas where public safety is achieved without the use of excessive and racially disproportionate targeting and policing of marginalized communities, where all communities have the resources and support they need to thrive.
